Dry, cracked Winter skin is the absolute WORST. The skin on my body gets extremely dry during the Winter months, so I make sure I follow some key steps to keep my skin looking and feeling its best. Today I am sharing ten helpful tips when caring for dry Winter skin.
The main areas on my body that get dry, cracked, and chapped, are my legs, feet, lips, and even my underarms. Yep, you heard right, my underarms!
Let’s jump into some tips that will become a crucial part of your Winter skincare routine.
Tip #1: Drink Water. Keeping yourself hydrated is very important no matter what time of year it is. Drinking plenty of water will not only keep you healthy on the inside, but it will show on the outside. Your skin will look clearer, glowing, and hydrated.
Tip #2: Use A Hydrating Cleanser. Dry skin is more than annoying and uncomfortable, it can lead to serious skin problems like worsening eczema, psoriasis, and can be major cause of Winter itch. Use a hydrating cleanser, and be sure to moisturize your skin after cleansing or gently exfoliating.
Tip #3: Exfoliate. It is important to remove any dead flaky skin from your face and body. Not only will this allow new skin cells to form, but will also make it easier for your skincare products to absorb into your skin making them even more effective. You should gently exfoliate only a few times a month so that you are not stripping your skin of the natural oils that it needs.
Tip #4: Use Wet Skin Moisturizers. These have truly helped lock moisture into my skin right after my shower. The best part is not having to rinse it off. Just apply, dry, and go! Applying a moisturizer while your skin is still wet allows for deeper hydration.
Tip #5: Care For Your Underarms. It’s easy to neglect your underarms because they aren’t really ever exposed, especially during the Winter when we are all bundled up. Dr. Alicia Barba, a Dove dermatologist, reminds us that our underarm skin is very sensitive, and can become easily irritated by the different textures in the fabric of your clothing. Dove Advanced Care Antiperspirant is formulated with moisturizers to help prevent irritation and leave your underarms softer and smoother over time. I love using Dove Advanced Care because it also gives 48 hour odor and wetness protection. It’s exactly what I need to get through busy days. Tip #6: Apply A Sleep Mask. Sleep masks are a huge part of my Winter skincare routine because they are packed with hydrating ingredients and there is no need to rinse them off. They get to soak into your skin all night as you sleep, leaving you with glowing beautiful skin in the morning.
Tip #7: Use Moisturizing Lip Products. Winter is brutal on my lips, and always leaves them chapped. During these months, I exfoliate them more often with a sugar scrub or toothbrush, and also keep away from using matte lipsticks that are very drying. Instead I use tinted lip balms, and hydrating lipsticks.
Tip #8: Use A Toner. Using a facial toner will help restore your skin PH balance, and help keep it from drying out after cleansing.
Tip #9: Night Skin Routine. I have learned that the best time for me to apply super hydrating products is at night, and Dr. Barba agrees, because that’s the best time to moisturize to prevent collagen break down. As long as you are strict with following a routine that works for you, you will be sure to see lasting results.
Tip #10: Dry Brush. This step is optional, but I have noticed that when I take some extra time twice a month to dry brush my skin before getting into the shower, any body care products I use absorb deeper into my skin.
Well, there you have it! My top ten tips for keeping your skin looking and feeling its best this Winter.
